PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 20th JULY 2010
NEW PARK CENTRE CELEBRATES SPORT ENGLAND GRANT
The New Park Community and Arts Association is delighted to announce that its bid to Sport England for £450,000 towards building a new mutli-use Dojo has been successful.
The application was made to Sport England’s £10 million fund allocated for investment in projects that will tackle the barriers to, and unearth new opportunities for, grassroots sport in rural areas. The new multi-use Dojo (martial arts and fitness facility), is part of the first phase of the ambitious project to refurbish and extend New Park Centre as a whole.
Michael Foyle, Chairman of NPCAA said, “We are extremely proud of this achievement. The Sport England Rural Communities Fund was considerably over-subscribed with over 500 original applications. Our project was one of just 15 selected. That New Park Centre has been successful in such a highly competitive and rigorous application process says a great deal both for the value of this project and the dedication and professionalism of our people. I warmly thank everyone who supported and worked on this application. It is immensely rewarding after so many years to see the development project at New Park Centre finally get underway. We can look forward to a wider range of sport, fitness and many other community activities taking place at New Park Centre in the future.”
With significant funding already secured from Chichester District Council and The Woodger Trust and valuable contributions from numerous other Trusts, Foundations and individuals the Sport England Award of £450,000 brings us to over 90% of our fundraising target for phase 1. The aim is to begin building work early in 2011 and to complete it within the year.
Hannah Bladen, Sport England’s Regional Lead for the South East, said: “If community sports clubs want to attract and retain participants, they need to be able to offer quality facilities for everyone. The improvements to New Park Centre’s facilities will be welcomed by regular users and those who are new to martial arts.”
Phase 1 of the project will see the dilapidated single-story building adjacent to the Old Victorian School demolished and replaced with a new building incorporating a multi-use Dojo, showers, changing and toilet facilities, and a replacement for the Hall Next Door. The current sports hall will then be refurbished to provide two flexible multi-use community rooms. Measures are in hand to ensure that the New Park Centre remains operational during this development process and temporary alternative accommodation is being sought for any groups who will be displaced because of building works.
The new Dojo will facilitate significant expansion of activities and enable martial arts groups to host training sessions and regional competitions at New Park for the first time. It will also be finished in time for Olympic teams to use in the build up to the 2012 Olympics.

Mark Beecher, Development Director for the British Judo Association said of the award ‘The BJA are pleased that New Park Centre has been awarded this grant to develop the facility as a whole and provide an excellent judo facility incorporating a permanent mat dojo and spectator seating. This will enable Chichester Ronin Judo Club to continue with and develop its successful club programme, and as well develop new links within the community and local schools. The clubs depth in coaches and volunteers will ensure that this new facility will maximise its potential going forward’
Cllr Myles Cullen, Leader of Chichester District Council said: "We support the Association with their plans to transform the New Park Centre. This award brings the realisation of that vision one step closer and the prospect of new facilities for local residents. It will undoubtedly further improve this attractive area of Chichester".
ENDS
Note to editors:
New Park Centre is currently used by over 60 local groups, including the much loved Chichester Cinema at New Park. On average over 2,250 people use the facilities each week and the Board now wishes to improve and upgrade the facilities to meet the needs of existing groups and provide additional, affordable, flexible space to enable more voluntary and community groups to offer a wider range of services and activities at New Park Centre. Once the whole project is complete it is estimated that over 100 groups will use the Centre with an average attendance of some 3,000 people per week.
The project will see the complete refurbishment of the Victorian building and a new building to replace the dilapidated single-storey building immediately to the north. The new facilities have been designed to complement the surrounding townscape and open parkland. Emphasis has been placed on the building’s “green credentials” to minimise running costs and set an example. The development will be phased in a way to allow the Centre’s continued operation whilst the building works are undertaken.
When ultimately constructed the scheme will have the following facilities -
*The Community Information Centre provides information on voluntary and community sector services and activities in the District and aims to develop a central booking service for all the community facilities in the City and surrounding rural area. Delivered in partnership with Voluntary and Community Action Chichester District and Chichester District Council a pilot service in advance of the completion of the development is already open, situated in a port-a-cabin opposite the entrance to New Park Centre.
Sport England invests National Lottery and Exchequer funding in organisations and projects that will grow and sustain participation in grassroots sport and create opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.
Sport England defined rural communities on the basis of the Government’s Rural and Urban Areas Classification.
Sport England is committed to creating a world-leading community sport system, and has set specific and measurable targets to achieve by 2012/13.
