Rediscover the Ancient Art of Bellydance: A Celebration of Strength, Culture and Wellbeing

Bellydance is one of the world’s oldest and most expressive art forms; a rich cultural tradition that celebrates strength, femininity and community. Rooted in traditional Egyptian and Middle Eastern cultures, this beautiful dance style has been passed down through generations of women and is now finding new life in community spaces across the UK.

Far from the misconceptions sometimes associated with it, authentic belly dance is a powerful cultural practice designed to help women grow in confidence, health and self-expression.

A Dance with Deep Cultural Roots

Traditional Egyptian-based belly dance has long been connected to the celebration of womanhood. In many Middle Eastern cultures, girls were historically introduced to belly dance when they began menstruation, marking an important transition in life. The dance was shared primarily among women and performed for women, creating a supportive space where femininity, strength and joy could be celebrated together.

Interestingly, in Egypt it is illegal for professional belly dancers to show their stomachs while performing. This reflects the cultural respect surrounding the dance and challenges many of the westernised misconceptions about the art form.

Historically, bellydance evolved through many forms. Some scholars believe it began as a type of martial movement used to strengthen the body, particularly the core and pelvic muscles. Over time it developed into a refined dance performed in royal courts and played a role in religious and cultural celebrations across different regions of the Middle East and North Africa.

Reclaiming a Historic Art Form

Like many cultural traditions, bellydance has been misunderstood through the lens of western patriarchal culture, which often removed the dance from its original context and meaning.

Today, dancers and teachers around the world are working to restore the reputation of this historic art form by educating audiences about its true origins and purpose. At its heart, belly dance is empowering, inclusive and deeply rooted in community.

Modern classes, such as Joelene Dandelions Bellydance at New Park Centre, honour these traditions while creating a welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities. In fact, many classes are family-friendly, and it is not uncommon to see younger dancers learning alongside adults.

The Wellbeing Benefits of Belly Dance

Talking about her classes Joelene stated: “Beyond its cultural significance, bellydancing is also a wonderful way to support physical and emotional wellbeing. Because the dance focuses on controlled, flowing movements of the hips, torso and arms, it provides a gentle but highly effective full-body workout.”

Joelene shared that participants often notice improvements in:

  • Core strength and posture

  • Flexibility and joint mobility

  • Balance and coordination

  • Pelvic floor strength

  • Cardiovascular fitness

She also highlighted that: “The rhythmic, repetitive movements of bellydancing, can also be incredibly calming and grounding, helping to reduce stress and promote mindfulness. Many dancers say that belly dance allows them to reconnect with their bodies in a positive and joyful way.”

Building Confidence and Community

One of the most special aspects of bellydance that Joelene notices, is the sense of community it creates.  She commented that: “Classes are supportive spaces where participants can laugh, move and grow together without pressure or judgement. For many women, belly dance becomes more than just a fitness class. It can be a confidence-building experience that encourages self-expression, body positivity and creativity. It reminds us that movement can be both joyful and empowering.”
